Integrative Social Program (SISP): Support for Out-of-School and Under Privileged Youths in Northern Nigeria
The crisis of insurgency in the North East and dare devil banditry in the North West of Nigeria have combined to increase the problems faced by out-of-school and under privileged youths most of who have adopted negative coping mechanisms like; prostitution and early marriage, drug abuse, alcoholism, crime and the lure to violent extremism to survive the harsh economic realities in Nigeria.
Many children are orphaned by the crisis and the greatest barrier for most out-of-school children in the is poverty given that the main occupation of the parents is subsistence farming which they have been denied access to this source of livelihood for several years as a result of the insurgency and banditry.
With constrained access to livelihoods, a growing number of parents are unable to meet the cost of education considering the high level of food insecurity thereby leaving the children to fend for themselves most of who have derailed into various shades and hews of criminality backed up with violent extremism.
As a responsive member of the civil society, Save-An-Inmate Foundation (SAIF) have come up with an Integrative Social Program (SISP) designed to identify the full set of skills and talents of out-of-school and under privileged youths and have shaped out a set of creative solutions that will offer quality education, impart digital skills and proficiency in entrepreneurial and vocational training that can contribute in stemming the rising tide of despondency among young people in the society.
From the beginning, we examined the social dynamics that affects the youths to enable us give guidance and counseling assistance and help them in determining their best interest by involving them in the decision-making process from their local communities to the national level.
We have explored the economic options and skills that can be developed to empower the youths and victims of human rights violations and their families while providing reintegration assistance to ex-convicts and other victims of human rights abuse by virtue of their status as victims of crimes perpetrated by others.
Through our social engagements with the youths on the street and in schools, we have identified gaps that should be filled through mentoring and strategic skills development if backed up with funding for implementation in order to sustain peace and inclusive economic growth in the society.
